Your current candidate drop-off rate is unacceptable! Okay, so it’s not just YOUR candidate drop off rate. It’s the industry’s! 73% of all candidates that go to a career site will not formally apply due to an unanswered question (CareerBuilder.com 2016 Candidate Behavior Study). That is a staggering 3 out of 4 candidates that are interested in what you have to offer that you never get to talk to. Did you know that for every additional page you require in your application process, candidates abandon the process at 90%? We spend all this time and money on vendors and making sure each job posting is perfect...and most of us even try and make sure our application is a short form – but we STILL lose over 90%. Why? Because the application is no longer a reasonable requirement for expressing interest in a job. It’s something that should happen later. Current state, it's hurting you more than it's helping you.

Let’s put it into an everyday scenario. I scroll through Instagram. I see an ad for a pair of boots that I’ve been eyeing for some time now. I click on the ad and it leads me to a website I’m unfamiliar with that requires me to add all my information plus get up and find my purse, so I can enter my credit card. I “x” out of that window – I’m not doing all that. I go straight to Amazon.com, find the same boots, and click to buy them instantly. Is it fair that the company who won me over with the ad will get no credit for my purchase? No. But it was the path of least resistance and it’s what our brains are programmed to expect. So why are we expecting candidates to be any different?

Oftentimes, the candidates you want are employed. They are in high demand. They are passively checking out opportunities on their desktop at work or on their phones over lunch. That is why it is so important that you make it EASY and QUICK for them to connect with your recruiters. They need to be able to interact with them in the same way they talk to their friends and family…the same way they buy things as consumers. That’s the only way you’ll get them into your process and impact that drop off rate.
